Description

Site

'Situated on level ground in forestry' (Grogan and Kilfeather 1997, 35-6).

Monument

'Granite monolith, narrower at the base than at the top (2.37m x 2.03m (top)- 1.02m (base) x 0.58m) with long axis aligned E-W' (Grogan and Kilfeather 1997, 35-6). 'Pieces broken from stone' (Macalister 1916, 230). The 3D model shows large cracks in the stone which are otherwise largely hidden by the lichen and texture of the stone.

Text

up on NE edge, picked. 'Scores broad and shallow' (Macalister 1916, 231).

Transliteration

MAQI NILI

Translation

'of the son of Nilos?'

Commentary

  • Although a spelling NELI might be expected (nom. *Néll, Mod. Ir. Níall) Macalister's (1945, 231) reading NILI is clearly correct.
