'On rockcrop overlooking Ballycrovane Harbour to W' (Power 1992, 124). Probably a prehistoric standing stone on which an ogham inscription was carved (Macalister 1945, 71).

4.70m x 1.02m x 0.32m (Note: Macalister converted has H 5.36m above ground). Stone narrows towards the top and is now supported at the base with concrete. The Ogham inscription is on the NW angle (Power 1992, 124).

Inscribed on one angle, up. Towards the end of the last name (approximately 10 feet above the ground) some of the scores curve to the right away from the angle as if the engraver was having difficulty reaching high enough to finish the inscription (Macalister 1945, 71).

Commentary

There is much variation in the spelling of the name MAQI-DECCEDDAS but this is the only example surviving with the final consonant in tact and may be dated to the first half, or the early second half, of the fifth century (McManus 1991, 93, 97). The tribal/sept name TURANIAS may refer to the Uí Thorna 'who may originally have been the leading group among the Cíarraige, [and who] occupied the territory between Slíab Lúachra and the sea', although this stone is in the barony of Bear in Co. Cork (McManus 1991, 112).
