Commentary

GOSSUCTTIAS - EOIr Gósacht, gúas `danger' (McManus 1991, 108). This personal name also occurs in inscriptions from Whitefield, Co. Kerry (CIIC 216: GOSOCTEAS) and Garranmillon, Co. Waterford (CIIC 283: GOSACTAS). It is also later attested as a personal name in Bethu Phátraic: The tripartite life of Patrick (épscop Gúasacht macc Milcon, see eDIL http://dil.ie/26762).

This is one of the inscriptions listed by McManus (1991, 93-4) to be among the earliest in the corpus showing no trace of vowel affection (as opposed to the -EAS ending of GOSOCTEAS). It may be dated to the first half, or the early second half, of the fifth century (McManus1991, 97).
